history

The place name is derived from an autochthonous shrub called caramiña ( Corema album ), also called hierba del hambre , hunger herb , in Spanish .

The remains of the Castros of Monte Mourin and Monte Croada as well as the Mámoa Reira bear witness to megalithic cultures in the region. The church of Santa María Xaviña and the bell tower in Ponte do Porto have survived from the Middle Ages. The palaces of the noble families Paxariña, Dor and Mouzo as well as the ruins of the Castelo do Sovereign stand for medieval secular architecture.

Several churches were built during the eighteenth century. During the uprising against the Napoleonic occupation of 1809, the ría of Camariñas was the scene of bloody fighting, in the course of which the French occupiers looted farms and killed a considerable number of local people. In the 1890s there was a wave of emigration to America and in the 1960s another wave to European countries.

economy

Aquaculture at Cabo Vilán

Fishing is the traditional main source of income for the place. Until the beginning of the 20th century, whaling also played a major role. Today hake , sardines, eel, squid, various types of mussels, shrimp , sea urchins and barnacles are traded in the port . In the estuary, mussels are raised on wooden rafts. Since 2005 an industrial aquaculture of the Norwegian company Stolt Sea Farm has been in operation at Cabo Vilán .

The common land is mainly used for forestry; Agriculture and animal husbandry play a lesser role. Tourism is becoming more and more important. The traditional craft of lace making is an attraction that significantly increases the number of visitors.

  • North of Camariñas on the coastal road is the Arenal de Trece nature reserve ; a natural rock and dune landscape. It is the largest protected area of the Caramiña that gave the place its name. The shrub grows up to a meter tall and has many branches. The small female flowers have three petals, the male flowers are leafless. The fruits are white-pink drupes up to one centimeter thick. They taste bittersweet and are ripe in August. The species is endangered; in the Arenal de Trece is their largest protected area in Galicia.
