Ponteceso ( Galician ) or Puenteceso ( Spanish ) is a municipality in northern Galicia. Until the end of the 19th century the place was called Bugalleira .

Origin of name

The name is derived from the Latin pons caesus , which means broken bridge .

Geographical location

Ponteceso is located in the province of A Coruña a little inland from the Costa da Morte at the point where the Río Anllóns widens into a slender estuary. In the village some important roads of the Costa da Morte cross, and the road to the south-west crosses the Río Anllons. Neighboring communities are Cabana de Bergantiños , Carballo , Coristanco and Malpica de Bergantiños .

The city of Ponteceso, as well as Corme Porto, Tella and Cospindo are the population centers within this community. Corme and Tella have the most inhabitants. The central medical facilities are located in Ponteceso and Corme.

economy

Important industries are fishing and the harvest of percebes and other seafood, as well as tourism. Both focus on Corme. In agriculture, maize and potatoes are mainly grown.

  • The estuary of the Río Anllón with its islands and sandbars.
  • From Monte Branco , located to the west of the city, one has an overview of this estuary to the east and south, behind it in the east a view over Ponteceso, and to the west a view over the Ría de Corme y Laxe .

Personalities

  • The poet Eduardo Pondal (1835–1917) wrote the poem Os Pinos , which became the national anthem of Galicia.
  • Ramón Barreira y Pérez (1850–1936) emigrated to Uruguay, where in 1878 he founded the Chamber of Commerce, a Spanish cultural association and the Granitol art print shop.
  • The Hermanos Moreira emigrated to Argentina and formed an accordion duo there. From the 1960s onwards, they were heard there, especially among the numerous Galician emigrants. They mixed traditional Galician style elements with their own ideas, original instrumentation and singing.
  • Amarelle , player in the Spanish national beach soccer team .
