The place consists of two parts:

  • Corme Porto on the seashore; the full Galician name is: Nosa Señora dos Remedios de Corme Porto . The spanish name is Corme-Puerto . Corme Porto had 1,142 inhabitants in 2013.

history

Rosita Rey , a typical merchant ship from the heyday of Corme

Rich finds of petroglyphs prove that the area around Corme was inhabited as early as prehistoric times. Settlement remains from the time of the Castro culture have been preserved, for example the Castro on Illa da Estrela south of the harbor bay. The earliest mention of the name Corme is in a document from the Caaveiro monastery from 1105. Later mentions can be found in 1375 in the Mapamundi de los Cresques and in 1544 in the Cosmographia by Sebastian Münster .

Later, thanks to fishing, the port grew faster than the original settlement of A Aldea. At the beginning of the 20th century, Corme experienced a heyday. Eight canned fish factories were based in Corme, and numerous merchants traded in fish, lobster and other goods. Corme Porto developed into Spain's most important timber export port and in 1920 had almost 3,000 inhabitants. With the Spanish Civil War , the Depression of the post-war years and later with the decline in fish stocks, especially sardines , the fish industry and with it the population shrank.

In the 1990s the place recovered; on the one hand through the cultivation of mussels on wooden rafts, on the other hand thanks to the controlled and sustainable harvest of Percebes on Cabo Roncudo. The Prestige tanker disaster in 2002 brought these activities to a standstill for several years. Nevertheless, in 2004 the fishing pier and the road to Ponteceso were renewed.

Efforts have been made since 2006 to break away from the municipality of Ponteceso because parts of the population are of the opinion that the administration in inland Ponteceso does not do justice to the interests of the port.

Attractions

Pedra da Serpe

Pedra da Serpe

A well-known monument in Corme is the Pedra da Serpe , Piedra de la serpiente in Spanish . It is a stone wayside cross that stands on a rock sculpture. A winged snake is carved out of the sculpture at the foot of the cross. The Pedra da Serpe is at the bottom of the car park at Praia da Ermida .

Although of Christian symbolism, the sculpture is associated with pre-Christian rites. According to some historians, the snake was worshiped by the Celts.

Legend has it that the area became uninhabitable because of a plague of snakes. Saint Adrian stamped his foot hard at a sermon. Then all the snakes hid under that stone, and one of them petrified. As a sign of Christianization, the cross was placed on the stone.

Cabo Roncudo

The almost five kilometer long road from the port to Cabo Roncudo offers a view over the large bay of Corme and Laxe along its entire length. Small bays with secluded beaches interrupt the rocky coastline below the road. At the end of the road you come across the lighthouse on the cape and a few meters to the left of it two simple white stone crosses in memory of the castaways who perished on the Costa da Morte.

beaches

Furna do Osmo

There are several beaches in Corme and the surrounding area, including:

  • The small Praia da Arnela is located in the center of the municipality. She has showers and is supervised by water rescuers.
  • The Praia do Osmo is the most popular bathing beach of the Cormeláns. It can be reached from the road via a junction on the left at the entrance to the village, or on foot via the promenade that leads from the neighboring Praia da Arnela. The beach is supervised by water rescuers; it has a small parking lot, showers, and a volleyball court.
  • Next to Praia do Osmo is the small Furna do Osmo . In Galician, Furna means a natural cavity. The beach lies beneath a large hollow in the field, well protected from the prevailing northwest winds. Every year in July, the Noite dos Encantos concert takes place there.
  • The Praia da Ermida is the largest beach Cormes. It is known for its dunes and its proximity to Illa da Estrela , which can be reached on foot at low tide. On the island is the Lady Chapel Ermida Virxe da Estrela , which gave the island and the beach their name. The beach has parking spaces, showers, playgrounds and a rescue service.
