The Cordillera de Chichas (also: Cordillera de Los Chichas ) is a mountain region in the Department of Potosí in Bolivia and, together with the Cordillera de Lípez, the southern section of the Bolivian Cordillera Central .

The Cordillera de Chichas is essentially divided into two parts:

  • the Montes Chichas Oeste, the western section of the Cordillere, and
  • the Montes Chichas Este, the eastern section of the Cordillere.

Montes Chichas Oeste (West Chichas)

The " Montes Chichas Oeste " stretch in a north-west-south-east direction from the Salar de Uyuni salt lake to the west of the Tupiza - Cotagaita line at a length of about 120 km and a width of 50 km. The highest peaks of the Cordillera de Chichas can be found in this section, from Cerro Huanchaca (5950 m) in the north-west to Cerro Tazna (5805 m) to Chorolque (5614 m) in the south-east. Due to the altitude and the low rainfall, this section of the Cordillera de Chichas is largely deserted, but rich in mineral resources, so that there are numerous mines in the remote regions of the Montes Chichas Oeste.

Montes Chichas Este (East Chichas)

The " Montes Chichas Este " stretch in a north-south direction from about Cotagaita to south of the city of Tupiza . This eastern part of the Cordillera is more clearly structured than the western part, the few larger rivers and roads run in a north-south direction. The ridges have names like Cerrillos, San Telmo, Las Cañas, Ingre, Huancaya, Caipipendí and Serrana de Aguarague.
The mountain ranges of the Montes Chichas Este from the area around Tupiza , which have different shades of red and rise in bizarre shapes from the valley landscapes, are famous .
