The Fate of Jean Morénas ( La Destinée de Jean Morénas ) is a short story by the French author Michel Verne . It is usually Jules Verne attributed, being on Jules Verne's manuscript history Pierre-Jean is based, wrote the Verne. 1851 Michel Verne recorded the story in the anthology Hier et demain ( Yesterday and Tomorrow ) published in 1910 .

The original story from 1851 describes the escape of Jean Morénas from the labor camp in Toulon . The merchant Bernardon helps Jean Morénas to escape and ensures his future in the United States .

Jean Morénas has been jailed for a crime he did not commit. He was accused of murdering his uncle Tisserand. In reality, however, it was his brother Pierre who committed the crime. This goes underground under a false name. Jean is innocent in prison. However, he manages to escape. Back in freedom, he first goes back to his home village to see how his former great love Marguerite is doing. In their company he meets the man who brought him to prison years ago because of his false testimony. Jean's love for Marguerite is still very big. For fear of hurting her, he takes no action against the informer.
