action

In the port city of Dunkirk , the pastor is prevented from reading mass. The old skipper Johann Cornbutte wants to keep a deal. His son is the captain of the brig Jeune-Hardie . When this comes back from the North Sea , the wedding between his son and niece Marie should take place. While the pastor has his vicar hold mass , Johann Cornbutte hurries to the harbor with his niece Marie, who is dressed in wedding dresses. The incoming ship, however, shows the mourning flag. Ludwig Cornbutte is no longer on board. The horrified attendees learn what has happened from the chief helmsman André Vasling. Near the maelstrom , the Jeune-Hardie crew noticed distress signals. The captain Ludwig Cornbutte and two of his sailors were released with the sloop to help the ship. The three disappeared in the fog in the storm and are considered lost. You will be pronounced dead later.

However, Johann Cornbutte does not want to accept it. He puts together a search team for his son and his comrades. Marie demands to take part in the search. The head helmsman André Vasling reports as a further participant in the search expedition. He's obviously vying for Marie's goodwill. The search expedition follows the entire Jeune-Hardie route and winters in a bay south of Shannon Island in the Greenland Sea . There are adverse environmental conditions there and various measures must be taken to protect against snow and ice.

After some difficulties, a search group looking for the missing persons on the ice heading north finds them. The young captain Ludwig Cornbutte is found by a wrecked Norwegian ship together with a comrade and two other gloomy sailors . When they return to the search expedition ship trapped in the ice, a drama begins. The chief helmsman André Vasling teams up with the rough-nosed Norwegians to take out the young Cornbutte and his followers. Vasling's goal is to have the few supplies for himself and his followers and to eliminate his rival Ludwig in order to be able to claim Marie for himself. An argument begins and what is good wins. At the end of the story, the old priest Ludwig receives Cornbutte and Marie in Dunkirk.
