Le Comte de Chanteleine (The Count of Chanteleine) is a short story by the French author Jules Verne . It was published in the Musée des Familles magazine from October to December 1864 and only appeared in German in 2013.

action

The loyal Breton Count Humbert de Chanteleine fights in the uprising of the Vendée together with his servant Kernan against the revolutionary troops of the Jacobins . During the fighting he learns that his unfaithful former servant Karval, whom he chased from his estate for stealing, has now become one of the most ardent supporters of the revolution . In the Count's absence, Karval raided his castle and caused a bloodbath in it. In addition to the farmers of the estate, he also had the countess and her daughter Marie executed. The knight Henry de Tregolane, who learned of the planned attack, wanted to save his sister shortly beforehand. This is what the count learns when he happens to meet the knight at the grave of the victims. He came too late to save his sister, but was still able to save Marie from the Jacobins.

Marie goes into hiding with Kernan and Henry de Tregolane in the fishing village of Douaenenez. The Catholic count takes on the role of a priest and gives spiritual support to the rural population. However, the traitor Karval does not rest. He raids the fishing village and is able to take the count prisoner during the wedding of Marie and Henry de Tregolane. Shortly thereafter, the loyal Kernan manages to kidnap the traitorous Karval and finally to kill him. The Count of Chanteleine escapes the guillotine as the Jacobin reign is coming to an end.

background

The short story reveals not only the opinion of the Catholic Jules Verne, but also his sympathies for the monarchists . The action takes place during the Vendée uprising ( Guerre de Vendée ), which took place from 1793 to 1796. It was about the armed struggle of the royalist-Catholic rural population of the Vendée region and parts of the neighboring departments against the republican revolutionary troops. The initially successful resistance of the Catholic rural population and the troops loyal to the king was bloodily suppressed by the Republicans in the first year. The resistance from the "underground" against the Jacobins lasted until 1796.
