The Niels Juel class was a corvette class of the Danish Navy . It consisted of the type ship, the Niels Juel (F 354) , the Olfert Fischer (F 355) and the Peter Tordenskiold (F 356) . You belonged to the 2nd squadron of the Danish Navy.
The ships of the class were named after Danish admirals : Niels Juel , Olfert Fischer and Peter Tordenskiold . Tordenskiold was Norwegian , but served because of the Danish-Norwegian personal union in the common navy.
history
The ships were planned by Yarrow Shipbuilders for Denmark and laid down on Aalborg Værft AS from 1978 to 1980 . The first ship entered service in 1980.
The class was built during the Cold War and equipped for the strategic features of the Danish east coast (islands, access to the North Sea ). In the post-Cold War era, however, the class proved to be flexible enough to deal with the new, global strategies. From 1998 to 2000, in particular the electrical and electronic systems and the weapons systems of the ships were modernized in order to be able to keep them in service for longer. The ships could operate nationally, i.e. in Danish waters, as well as internationally. They also had the option of taking on Signals Intelligence tasks.
Their tasks were among other things escort, support and embargoes . The ships took part in the following missions:
Niels Juel
Olfert Fischer
- Second Gulf War
- Operation Iraqi Freedom
- Standing NATO Maritime Group 1
Peter Tordenskiold
All three units were decommissioned in August 2009 at the Korsør naval base . The successor ships of the Niels Juel class , the frigates of the Iver Huitfeldt class , were still under construction at this time.
