Olfert Fischer
Johan Olfert Fischer (born August 4, 1747 in Copenhagen , † February 18, 1829 ibid) was a Danish-Norwegian naval officer , most recently in the rank of vice admiral .
biography
Fischer was born as the son of the Danish admiral Olfert Fas Fischer (1700–1761) in Copenhagen. After the death of his father, he joined the Danish-Norwegian Navy as a cadet in 1763 . A few years later he was promoted to lieutenant . As an officer on duty in a guard on Holmen near Copenhagen, he and other guards are said to have molested a prostitute . Before a military court, the prostitute escalated the allegations against Fischer and his people into violent assault. Fischer was found guilty and demoted to a simple sailor for a year .
In 1784 he was promoted to captain and was given command of the warship Bornholme of the Danish West India Company. In 1799 he saved with his ship, the crew of the capsized during a storm battleship Oldenborg near Cape Town .
Commodore Fischer was the Danish commander in the naval battle of Copenhagen during the First Napoleonic War in 1801. Although his flagship, the 60-gun two-decker Dannebrog , was set on fire in the battle and Denmark lost the battle because the Danish fleet was poorly organized and unprepared, Fischer was celebrated as a folk hero in his homeland. During the fighting he suffered a head injury and after his recovery was only entrusted with minor tasks.
In 1809, at the age of 62, he was promoted to Vice Admiral.
Fischer died at the age of 81 and was buried in the Reformert Kirke cemetery in Copenhagen.
Honors
In 1905 the Danish coastal armored ship Olfert Fischer of the Herluf Trolle class and in 1981 the corvette Olfert Fischer of the Niels Juel class after his name was put into service by the Danish Navy .
In April 2001 he was honored by Frederik Magle in the piece of music The Hope ( Håbet ) in memory of the Battle of Copenhagen on the 200th anniversary.
