Munkebo is a small Danish town within the Kerteminde municipality . The population of the city was 5538 on January 1, 2020.
geography
Munkebo is located in the northeast of the island of Funen in the Syddanmark region . It is located about 14 km northeast of Odense , on the southern tip of the Hindsholm peninsula between the Odense Fjord and Kertinge Nor . The city is located about 8 km west of Kerteminde .
history
The name Munkebo is derived from the word Munkebothae (Danish munkenes boder ). He refers to the monks of the Sankt Knuds monastery in Odense, who founded the place because it was near fish-rich waters. The place belonged to them until the Reformation reached the area in 1536.
From the 1950s, the place underwent a major change with the establishment of Lindøværft. During this time, the population grew rapidly: from around 1,000 in 1955 to around 5,000 in 1965.
Until 2006 the place belonged to the Munkebo municipality , which became part of the Kerteminde municipality.

In the north of Munkebo, by the Odense Fjord, there is Lindøværft , which belongs to the A. P. Møller Mærsk group. In 2010 Fayard A / S moved from Fredericia to the shipyard in Munkebo.

Munkebo has a small port. The city is connected to Odense and Kerteminde by road 165.
