Belinda Snell (born January 10, 1981 in Mirboo North , Australia ) is a professional basketball player. From 2005 to 2011 she played in the Women's National Basketball Association . She currently plays for the Bendigo Spirit team in the Australian Women's National Basketball League (WNBL). The 1.80 meter tall Snell is mainly used in the position of the guard.
After winning titles during her time in Australia, Snell moved to the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA in 2005 . In her third WNBA season, she won her first championship title with the team. In addition, she won the gold medal with the national team at the 2006 World Basketball Championship . In the WNBA season breaks, she mostly played for European teams.
Career
Australia (Women's National Basketball League)
Snell began her professional career in 1998 at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) with whom she won the WNBL championship in her first season. In the 1999/2000 season she was appointed co-captain of the AIS. After two seasons at AIS, she moved to the Sydney Uni Flames. In her first season for the Flames, she won her second WNBL championship title. In the following four seasons she reached the final with the Flames every time, but won another WNBL championship for the time being. After the 2004/05 season in which she set a new club record with the Flames with 54 points in one game, she moved to the WNBA as a free agent for the Phoenix Mercury .
On September 4, the WNBL announced that Snell will be under contract with the Sydney Uni Flames in the 2011/12 WNBL season . Since the 2014/15 season Snell has been playing in the WNBL for the Bendigo Spirit team .
Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA)
In the 2005 WNBA season , she stood for the Mercury in 20 games on the field, averaging 3.3 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. In the 2005/06 WNBA season break, she played one last season for the Sydney Uni Flames, but in 2006 she did not reach the final for the first time in six years. In the 2006 WNBA season , she was already in 30 games for the Mercury on the field, but her playing time hardly changed, so her point average was 3.3 at the same level as in the previous year. In the 2007 season she won her first WNBA championship with the Mercury and had her first appearances in the team's starting lineup. After not being under contract with any WNBA team in 2008, she focused on the Summer Olympics . In 2009 she signed with the San Antonio Silver Stars . In the 2009 WNBA season , she played her strongest season to date. Snell averaged 6.2 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. In the playoffs, however, she was only on the field once for the Silver Stars.
In the 2010 WNBA season she was only on the field in two games for the Silver Stars. On February 9, 2011, she signed a contract with the Seattle Storm as a free agent . There she was only used as a substitute for 21 games. The 2011 season was Snell's last in the WNBA for the time being.
Up to this point she played in 6 WNBA seasons in the regular season 133 games, she was 9 May in the starting lineup and scored 509 points, 210 rebounds and 130 assists. In 11 playoff games (without a start in the starting lineup) she scored 130 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists.
Europe
Like many WNBA players, Snell regularly plays in Europe during the WNBA season break. Since 2006 she has been on the field for teams from Italy, France, Russia, Spain and Poland. Most recently she played for the Polish club CCC Polkowice in the 2013/14 season . She and her teams won the national basketball championship in Poland and France and twice the title in Spain. With the Spanish team Perfumerías Avenida Salamanca , she also won the Euroleague Women in 2011 .
National team
Snell won the silver medal with the Australian national basketball team at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and 2008 in Beijing, as well as the Olympic bronze medal in London in 2012 . She also won the gold medal with the team at the 2006 World Basketball Championship . After finishing fifth at the 2010 World Cup , she took third place with the national team at the 2014 World Cup . She also won the Oceania Championships in 2013 and 2015 with the national team .
