Sergio Scariolo (born April 1, 1961 in Brescia , Lombardy ) is an Italian basketball coach. In addition to five national titles as a club coach, he led the Spanish national team to three European championships.

Career

After Scariolo had been assistant coach at Basket Brescia and Scavolini Pesaro and had also been responsible for the Italian military selection, he became head coach in Pesaro in 1989. In his first season he won the Italian championship, at European level Scariolo reached the final in the Korać Cup and in the following year the semi-finals in the national championship cup . After leading Aurora Desio's team for two years, he took over as coach of Fortitudo Bologna in 1993 . He led the promoted team straight away into the play-offs and was named Serie A coach of the year. Scariolo stayed with Fortitudo until November 1996 and reached the final of the Italian championship there in his last full season.

From 1997 to 2008 Scariolo was active as a coach in the Spanish ACB league. He won the Spanish basketball cup with Tau Cerámica in 1999 , and in 2000 he reached the final of the play-offs in the ACB league. At Real Madrid he was responsible for the sporting management from 1999 to 2002, in the last two years he was also General Manager . After winning the Spanish championship in 2000, Scariolo was also named coach of the year in Spain, but the following year he failed with Real in the final. From November 2003 to 2008 he was a coach at Unicaja Málaga , where Scariolo again won the Spanish Cup in 2005 and the national championship in 2006. At the end of 2008 he took over the coaching position from BK Chimki and a little later the post as the Spanish national coach , which had been vacant since the end of the 2008 Olympic Games . At the 2009 European Championships , he won the title with Spain. Scariolo stayed with Chimki until the end of 2010 and reached the final of the Eurocup with the club in 2009 . In 2011 he returned to Italy for the first time since 1997 as a club coach and signed a contract with Olimpia Milano . In the summer of the same year, Scariolo Spain defended its title at the 2011 European Championships , after the 2010 World Cup had been rather disappointing when it was eliminated in the quarter-finals. After winning the silver medal at the 2012 Olympic Games , Scariolo announced his resignation from the office of Spanish national coach.

The Canadian NBA club Toronto Raptors fired their long-term coach Dwane Casey after the 2017-18 season and then introduced their then assistant coach Nick Nurse as their new head coach in the summer . This then took Scariolo on as an assistant coach in his coaching staff.
