John Martin Collins III (born September 23, 1997 in Layton , Utah ) is an American basketball player . He is under contract with the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA .

Career

Collins' career began with the basketball team at Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach , Florida . There he was named Florida Class 4A Player of the Year in his senior year.

After high school, Collins attended Wake Forest University , where he played for two years. After leaving the bank as a freshman, he made the leap into the starting line-up as a sophomore. Collins led his team with an average of 19.2 points, which contributed to his being named ACC Most Improved Player and named to the First Team All-ACC.

After two years at Wake Forest, Collins decided to enroll in the 2017 NBA Draft , where he was selected 19th by the Atlanta Hawks . He played a very convincing rookie season , at the end of which he settled as a starter. He had an average of 10.5 points in 74 games this season with a very good field hit rate of 57.6%. He also got 7.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game. At the end of the season he was elected to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team . In his sophomore year, Collins made a significant increase, scoring 19.5 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game for the Hawks .

In early November 2019, Collins was banned from 25 games after traces of a substance that promotes the release of growth hormones were found in a doping test . Collins said he was taking a dietary supplement he was not aware of containing the banned substance.
