Joel Hans Embiid (born March 16, 1994 in Yaoundé ) is a Cameroonian basketball player who is currently under contract with the Philadelphia 76ers in the North American NBA .

Youth and college

Embiid grew up in Cameroon and played soccer and volleyball in his youth . His father Thomas was a handball player. Joel Embiid began playing basketball at the age of 15 and was promoted in Yaoundé at the Kossengwe performance center. He was discovered in a basketball camp by the Cameroonian NBA professional Luc Mbah a Moute and has been promoted since then. At the age of 16 Embiid moved to the USA .

He attended two high schools in Florida and became one of the best young players in the country. He drew comparisons with Hakeem Olajuwon and Tim Duncan . In 2012, he decided to play at the college level for the University of Kansas .

At college, Embiid developed, alongside teammate Andrew Wiggins , into one of the best players in the NCAA college league . Due to a back injury, however, he could not participate in the championship round, Kansas was eliminated in the third round. He still won several awards, including Best Defender of the Big 12 Conference . After a year of college with the Kansas Jayhawks, Embiid signed up for the NBA draft . In his first and only year in the NCAA, he scored 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 2.6 blocks in 23.1 minutes per game.

While preparing for the draft, Embiid broke his foot and needed an operation. As a result, he was out for several months. Until his injury, he was considered a candidate for the first draft position.

NBA

In the 2014 NBA draft he was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers selected third. However, due to his foot injury, he suspended the entire 2014/15 NBA season . In preparation for the 2015/16 season , he suffered another setback when he had to undergo another operation. Due to this intervention, it was not used in the 2015/16 season. Embiid made his NBA debut at the start of the 2016/17 season . In the 103: 97 defeat of the Sixers against the Oklahoma City Thunder Embiid get 20 points and seven rebounds. For his good performance, Embiid was named Rookie of the Month at the Eastern Conference for November and December. In March he suffered another injury, which ended the season for Embiid prematurely. He finished his rookie season with 20.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game. Due to only 31 completed season games, he was not a contender for the NBA Rookie of the Year Award . However, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team .

Embiid signed a new $ 148 million five-year deal with the Sixers at the start of the 2017/18 season . In February 2018 Embiid was called up for the first time as a starter in the NBA All-Star Game and was elected to both the All-NBA Second Team and the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in May . Embiid came to 22.9 points, 3.2 assists and 11.0 rebounds on average and completed 63 season games. In addition, the Sixers qualified for the playoffs, where they lost to the Boston Celtics in the Conference semifinals .

National team

In 2018, French media reported that the French federation might be interested in winning Embiid for the country's national team. According to the Cameroonian association, there was a meeting between Embiid and the French association president. Embiid said in January 2018 that he wanted to play for Cameroon if, among other things, the medical framework was right for the national team. France, where parts of his family live, is also a possibility, he also does not exclude the United States.
