Trevor Anthony Ariza (born June 30, 1985 in Miami , Florida ) is an American basketball player with Dominican roots. He currently plays in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Portland Trail Blazers .

Career

Ariza began his basketball career at Westchester High School in Los Angeles . After a successful time at the school, he decided in 2003 for a UCLA basketball scholarship with the UCLA Bruins . There he played a season and signed up for the upcoming NBA Draft after the season .

In the 2004 NBA Draft , he was selected 43rd by the New York Knicks . After an eventful time in New York, he and Penny Hardaway were transferred to Orlando Magic for Steve Francis in 2006 .

In November 2007 he was sent to the Los Angeles Lakers for Maurice Evans and Brian Cook , where he played until the end of the 2008/2009 season. With the Lakers, Ariza worked for the first time as a reliable role player and became an important part of the Lakers rotation through his athleticism and good defense. Towards the end of the 2008/09 NBA season , Ariza was appointed to the Lakers' starting five and won the 2009 NBA championship with the team .

In July 2009, he was introduced as a new member of the Houston Rockets, where he received a five-year contract with a salary of $ 33 million, also made possible by Yao Ming's injury . During the 2010 summer break, he was sent to New Orleans in a four-team swap. That's what Courtney Lee came to Houston for.

In the summer of 2012, Ariza was transferred to the Washington Wizards together with Emeka Okafor . In return, Rashard Lewis switched to the Hornets. He became a free agent for the 2014/2015 season . He signed a four-year contract with the Houston Rockets, who gave forward Chandler Parsons that same summer .

After his contract in Houston expired, he signed a one-year contract with the Phoenix Suns as a free agent in the summer of 2018. In mid-December 2018, Ariza was given to the Washington Wizards by the Suns for Austin Rivers and Kelly Oubre Jr. After a brief stint with the Washington Wizards , Ariza was transferred to the Portland Trail Blazers in January 2020 .

Style of play

Ariza is characterized by his strong one-on-one defense and good agility in defense. Thanks to clever movements away from the ball and a reliable three-point throw, it can also be used as a supplement to players who are in danger of being in a basketball and who need a lot of possession.

Ariza is the perfect example of a player with strengths in threesomes and defense ( 3-and-D player ), who can defensively defend the opponent's best winger and who scores reliably on the offensive without needing a lot of ball contact.
