John Ortberg Junior (born May 5, 1957 in Rockford , USA) is an American psychologist , Protestant theologian , best-selling author, speaker and former senior pastor of the Menlo Park Presbyterian Church (MPPC) in California .

Life

John Ortberg (Junior) grew up as the son of the Swedish-born American John Ortberg (Senior) in the more rural Rockford. He studied theology at Wheaton College in Wheaton near Chicago and graduated with a bachelor's degree. He then studied clinical psychology at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena , Los Angeles . There he also did a master’s degree and his doctoral thesis. He later studied in Europe at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland .

From 1985 to 1990 he worked as a senior pastor in the rapidly growing Simi Valley Community Church in Ventura , and from 1990 to 1994 at Horizons Community Church (today: Baseline Community Church in Claremont , California). In 1994 he moved back to Illinois to serve as a teaching pastor at Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington near Chicago. In 2003 he returned to California, where, until his resignation in 2020, he served as senior pastor at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church, a multi-campus church near Stanford . This Protestant church has over 4000 members.

Ortberg has been a speaker at major conferences, he has spoken at Promise Keepers (2006), Westmont College (2007), Global Leadership Summit (2008 and 2012) and at Willow Creek Leadership in Germany (2005, 2010 and 2012).

Ortberg has also written several books and won awards in the USA: Christianity Today Book Award Winner 2002 for: The Life You've Always Wanted: Spiritual Disciplines for Ordinary People (with over 500,000 copies sold by 2008, in German: Das Leben, that you long for ) and ECPA Christian Book Award winner 2008 for: When the game is over, its all goes back in the box (in German: When the game is over, everything ends up in the box ). With the latest work Who is this man? (2012; in German: Weltbeweger, 2013) Ortberg landed on the American bestseller list.

Since 2013, his sermons with German subtitles can be heard at ERF Medien . He is also on the board of directors at Fuller Theological Seminary, Dallas Willard Center for Spiritual Formation, and Christianity Today International .

He is married to Nancy Ortberg, they have three grown children and live in Menlo Park, California.

Theological teaching

Ortberg combines theology, psychology and life experience in his teaching. The central theme of his lectures and books is the spiritual education and change of people through turning to God . By this he understands the shaping and transformation of the human character through authentic experiences with God. Today, this is often countered by the personal desire and social pressure for more security, convenience, meaning and success. All of this could not bring lasting happiness, because people were ultimately laid out for God's eternity , where they would find the deepest fulfillment.

In his apologetic work World Movers , published in 2012 , he explains why Jesus and his followers did more than other movements for the rise of our culture , for education , health care and equality between men and women. In the chapters Friday, Saturday and Sunday he describes and justifies the events around the crucifixion, burial and resurrection of Jesus.

The book Guardian of My Soul , published in 2014, is again a pastoral book dedicated to his mentor Dallas Willard (1935–2013), from whom he had learned a lot. Using stories and examples, he describes the soul as the totality of man, which includes his will, mind, body and relationship with God. It is also more than the psychological self because it is strengthened and can grow in difficulties, suffering and death, which he was able to observe and experience with Willard and other people.

In his book Eternity Is Now , he pleads for the insight that faith should no longer be seen as a ticket to heaven once purchased: “What if salvation did not primarily mean getting us to heaven, but rather to get heaven in us? "
