Gordon Tullock (born February 13, 1922 in Rockford , Illinois - † November 3, 2014 in Des Moines , Iowa ) was an American professor of law and economics at the George Mason University School of Law in Arlington County . He is considered one of the fathers of the New Political Economy .

Life

Gordon Tullock was born in Rockford, Illinois in 1922, where he also went to school. He then attended the University of Chicago and the associated law school . Before he received his Juris Doctor in Chicago in 1947 , he did military service in World War II . In the fall of 1947 he became a member of the United States Foreign Service ; Tullock went to Tianjin , China as an American diplomat for two years . He then returned to the USA , where he learned Chinese for three semesters on behalf of the US State Department . In 1952 he became a member of the Mainland China Department of the Consulate General in Hong Kong , only to move to the Embassy in Korea nine months later. In 1956, Tullock left the US diplomatic service.

From 1958 to 1959, Tullock completed a post-doctorate at the Thomas Jefferson Center for Political Economy at the University of Virginia . He was then until 1962 assistant or associate professor at the Chair of International Studies at the University of South Carolina . From there he returned to the University of Virginia, where he taught economics as an associate professor. From 1967 to 1968 he taught economics and political science at Rice University as a full professor . In August 1968 he was appointed professor of economics and new political economy at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University . In 1978 he was accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In June 1983 he was a Holbert R. Harris Professor at George Mason University before moving to the University of Arizona in the fall of 1987 . In 1999 he became a professor again at George Mason University.
