Otto Herman Swezey

Otto Herman Swezey (born June 7, 1869 in Rockford , Illinois , † November 3, 1959 ) was an American entomologist. His research focus was the Entomofauna the Hawaii Islands and Guam .

Life

Otto Herman Swezey was born to Adoniram Judson and Malinda Swezey (née Bruner) in Rockford, Illinois. After visiting the Rockford High School, he made 1896 at Lake Forest College in Lake Forest his Bachelor Accounts. In 1897 he received his masters degree from Northwestern University in Evanston , Illinois . From 1897 to 1902 he was a lecturer at Northwestern University and from 1902 to 1903 he was a teacher at Ohio State University . From 1903 to 1904 he was the nursery and orchard inspector for the Ohio State Board of Agriculture. In 1904 he was hired as an entomologist at the experimental station of the Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association in Honolulu . In 1904 he married Mary Hypathia Walsh in Cleveland , Ohio . The couple had a son. In 1907 he became honorary curator for entomology at the Bernice P. Bishop Museum in Honolulu, where he mainly conducted studies on the Hawaiian entomofauna and on the economic effects of insect damage and parasitism by insects. In the following years he also undertook entomological expeditions outside of Hawaii, which led him to Guam , among other places .

Otto Herman Swezey was a member of the following organizations: Ohio State Academy of Science , Sigma Xi , Scientific Society , American Society for the Advancement of Science , American Association of Economic Entomologists and the Hawaiian Entomological Society .

Swezey's first scientific descriptions include beak- tailed taxa such as Dictyophorodelphax mirabilis (1907), owl butterflies such as Agrotis kerri (1920) and beetles such as Plagithmysus davisi (1946).

Dedication names

The following taxa are named after Otto Herman Swezey: Ponera swezeyi , Drosophila swezeyi , Anaphothrips swezeyi , Zorotypus swezeyi , Emoloana swezeyi , Otitesella swezeyi and Bracon swezeyi .
