List of cities in Russia |
Balakowo ( Russian Балако́во ) is a city with 199,690 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in the Saratov Oblast in Russia , about 800 km southeast of Moscow. Balakowo is located 161 kilometers northeast of the regional capital Saratov , on the left meadow bank of the Volga , which is dammed here to form the Saratower reservoir .
history
Balakowo was founded in 1762 in connection with the resettlement of the Old Believers operated by Tsarina Catherine II . In 1913 Balakowo was granted city status. In the 1960s, an extensive chemical industry developed in Balakowo. The city grew strongly in the years 1967-70 due to the construction of the Saratov hydropower plant on the Volga.
Due to the poor economic situation, the city received funding from the Russian state for the construction of its own airport ( Balakowo-Süd ), which should be larger than the airport of the provincial capital Saratov. However, the money ran out during the construction work so that the airport remained much smaller than originally planned.

The Balakowo NPP started building a waste treatment center in cooperation with RWE NUKEM as early as 1994. The waste treatment center has now been handed over and will go into "hot" operation in the near future.
