Arkadak ( Russian Аркада́к ) is a city in Saratov Oblast ( Russia ) with 12,845 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the Oka-Don plain about 250 km west of the Oblast capital Saratov on the Great Arkadak near its confluence with the Chopjor , a tributary of the Don .
Arkadak is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .
The city lies on the railway line opened in 1896 Balashov - Rtishchevo - Penza .
history
Arkadak was founded in 1721 as a village, which got its name after the river (derived from the Turkic language Hinterer Berg ). In 1939 the place received the status of an urban-type settlement and in 1963 the town charter .

Culture and sights
In Arkadak the Church of the Assumption ( церковь Вознесения / zerkow Vosnessenija) from 1822 has been preserved, as well as a relatively large part of the historical wooden buildings. The city has had a local museum since 1968.
economy
Arkadak is the center of an agricultural area. Various companies in the food industry are located in the city, some of which were founded in the 19th century ( Arkadakski liquor factory ; oil mill since 1913).
