history

Church of the Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky

Rtishchevo was founded at the end of the 16th century or the beginning of the 17th century. A church was mentioned as early as 1666. The place was named after the name of the church Pokrovsky until 1723 . In 1723, following a decree by Peter the Great , the land was distributed to veterans of the Great Northern War . Among these veterans was the new owner of the village with the family name Rtishchev. After him the village got its current name Rtishchewo.

In 1868, a Zemstvo committee for the construction of the Tambov-Saratov railway decided to build a second-class station in Rtishchevo . In 1871 the station was put into operation. With the construction of the railway station, a number of other small settlements emerged around the place. Together with these settlements, Rtishchevo formed a separate administrative district, which existed until 1917. Thereafter, the Rajon Rtishchevo was created and appointed Rtishchevo as its administrative center. In 1920 Rtishchevo received city rights.
