history

Pugachev was created after Empress Catherine II issued her manifesto for the settlement of the Volga plain in 1762 . The place was founded in 1764 as a settlement Mechetnaja ( Мечетная ) by old Orthodox who returned from Poland. The name Metschetnaja is derived from the ruins of Islamic mosques from the time of the Golden Horde found here. In 1765 the place already had 264 men. At that time the place consisted of only one street.

In 1772 Jemeljan Pugachev , the leader of the Pugachev peasant uprising , stayed in Mechetnaya. An old man is said to have advised him to present himself as the late Tsar Peter III. to spend.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the population had increased so much that after the tsarist decree of December 18, 1835, city rights were granted. At the same time the city was in honor of Nicholas I in Nikolaevsk renamed. In 1836 the city was named the capital of the Nikolayevsk district in the Samara governorate.

On November 11, 1918, the city was renamed again on the initiative of the Bolshevik military leader Vasily Chapayev . The new name Pugachev refers to Jemeljan Pugachev, the leader of the peasant uprising of 1773-75 (see above).
