The Great Irgis ( Russian Большой Иргиз , Bolshoi Irgis) is a left tributary of the Volga in the Samara and Saratov oblasts in southeastern European Russia .
description
It rises in the Obschtschi Syrt ridge south of Samara , right on the border with Orenburg Oblast . First it flows in a westerly and northwestern direction through the south of Samara Oblast. At Pestrawka it turns to the southwest and a little later reaches the Saratov Oblast.
Then the Great Irgis flows strongly meandering in a mostly westerly direction and finally reaches the city of Pugatschow . Shortly afterwards, after a run of 675 km below Balakowo, it flows into the Volgograd reservoir on the Volga.
The Great Irgis is a steppe river, very sluggish and on average only about one to three meters deep. It is therefore not navigable. Its width is between 25 and 45, in the area of the mouth 84 m. Its cleared banks are densely populated. Mammoth bones were found in the shore sand .
