history

A block of the nuclear power plant under construction

Construction of the first reactor block began on December 1, 1980; it was put into operation on December 28, 1985. Over the next few years, the construction of three more reactor blocks began, which then went on stream on October 8, 1987, December 25, 1988 and April 11, 1993. Construction on the fifth and sixth reactor blocks was discontinued. All reactors were designed for a period of 30 years. The term of the blocks was increased from 2015 to up to 60 years.

The four reactor blocks are pressurized water reactors of Russian design, so-called VVER of the third generation with the model 1000/320. The four reactors have a gross output of 1,000 megawatts each  .

The nuclear power plant feeds an average of 30,000 gigawatt hours into the grid per year  , making it one of the largest electricity suppliers in Russia.

Accident

On November 4, 2004 there was an incident in the nuclear power plant, as a result of which the population in the village and the surrounding area became very uncomfortable and in some cases hamsters were bought. Numerous frightened neighbors bought iodine-containing radiation antidotes in pharmacies, as reported by eyewitnesses and news agencies. Universities in Samara , 300 kilometers to the northeast, have been closed. City shops advised employees to stay home. The environmental organization Greenpeace in Russia feared a leak . The incident brought back memories of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in April 1986 in Ukraine (then part of the Soviet Union ).

Ultimately, according to the operator Energoatom, the incident in the power plant was only a minor malfunction. There were no increased radioactive emissions, a risk can be ruled out, said the Russian Atomic Energy Agency.

On May 4, 2007, two units were automatically switched off; the cause was damage to the switchgear at the power plant. The reactors were run down to 10% nominal power and on Saturday, May 5th, 2007 they were run up again to full power.
