In Finland Ruska-Aika or Ruska for short is a natural spectacle comparable to the North American Indian Summer or the German Indian Summer . It is limited to Lapland , the northernmost part of Europe on the Arctic Circle .

The Ruska season is the real highlight of the year for many local nature lovers. September is Ruska month. In the transition phase from the nocturnal time of the midnight sun to the atmospheric semi-darkness of the polar night , bushes and trees change color almost overnight, a real explosion of colors sets in and spreads rapidly, from the moors through the birch forests to the fells . While the sunnier south-facing slopes are still shining green, the berry bushes and heather on the north side shine in deep red. Even from a distance, the different tree species can now be made out solely by their color: birches shine golden yellow, aspens red, and mountain ash has a spectrum of green watch over yellow and orange to dark red.
