Peter Smrek (born February 16, 1979 in Martin , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Slovak ice hockey player . In the National Hockey League , he completed a total of 28 games for the St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers . He was also active in the North American minor leagues , for Severstal Tscherepowez in the Continental Hockey League and in Germany for the Frankfurt Lions and Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg .
Career
Peter Smrek began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth of the MHC Martin , where he was active until 1998. He then moved to the junior team Des Moines Buccaneers, for which he played in the 1998/99 season in the United States Hockey League . He was then selected in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft in the third round as a total of 85th player by the St. Louis Blues , for which he made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 2000/01 season . As in the previous year, the defender was mostly on the ice for the Blues farm team , the Worcester IceCats , in the American Hockey League . On March 5, 2001, the right-wing shooter was given in exchange for the Russian Alexei Gussarow to the New York Rangers , for whom he was on the ice 14 times by the end of the season. In the 2001/02 season he ran eight more times for the Rangers in the NHL, but otherwise played until 2004 exclusively in the American Hockey League for the Hartford Wolf Pack , the Milwaukee Admirals and the Binghamton Senators .
In the summer of 2004, Smrek received a free agent contract with DEL- climber Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg , which he left after a year after his license was withdrawn to play for Mora IK in the Swedish Elitserien . The Slovak then returned to the DEL, where he was on the ice for the Frankfurt Lions from 2006 to 2008 . After he started the 2008/09 season at his home club MHC Martin , he moved after only four games to HC Plzeň from the Czech Extraliga , with which he was defeated by HC Slavia Prague in the playoff semifinals . For the 2009/10 season , the Slovak was committed by Severstal Tscherepowez from the Continental Hockey League . With one goal and three assists in 29 games, however, he could not prevail there permanently, so his contract was not extended. From 2010 he was without a club before he played again for his parent club MHC Martin in the Slovakian extra league between 2013 and 2015.

For Slovakia Smrek took part in the U20 Junior World Championship in 1999 and the World Championships in 2002 and 2009 . He was also in the line-up of Slovakia at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City .
