Career
Rastislav Staňa began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown at TJ VSŽ Košice , in whose junior division he was active until 1998. First, however, the goalkeeper played for two years in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League for the Moose Jaw Warriors and Calgary Hitmen . From 2000 to 2002, the Slovak was with Washington's farm teams , the Richmond Renegades from the East Coast Hockey League and the Portland Pirates from the American Hockey League , between the posts, where he ran mainly in the ECHL. In the 2003/04 season , the national player made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Washington Capitals, for which he was on the ice in six games. The remaining time from 2002 to 2004, however, he spent with the Portland Pirates from the AHL.
In the summer of 2004 Staňa went to other European countries for the first time, where he received a contract with Södertälje SK from the Swedish Elitserien . After two seasons he signed with their league rivals Malmö Redhawks , where he moved to Linköpings HC during the 2006/07 season. With Linköping, the 2002 world champion failed two times in a row in the finals for the Swedish championship in 2007 and 2008. Then Severstal Tscherepowez took him from the newly founded Continental Hockey League under contract, for which he completed a total of 112 KHL games until 2011. After the 2010/11 season, Staňa moved within the KHL to HK CSKA Moscow and was one of the best goalkeepers in the league for the next two and a half years. In January 2014 he left the army sports club and returned to his home club, for which he played 25 games by the end of the season and won the Slovak championship with the club .
