Francis Lessard (born May 30, 1979 in Montreal , Québec ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The right winger played 115 games for the Atlanta Thrashers and Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League (NHL), but was mostly used in minor leagues . He embodied the player type of the Enforcer .

Career

Francis Lessard began his career in 1996 at Foreurs de Val-d'Or in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ) and was active for the team for two years. Already there he was noticed because of his harshness and therefore had to sit in the penalty box for many minutes. In 148 games he brought it to 751 penalty minutes. Between 1998 and 1999 he played for the Voltigeurs de Drummondville . Lessard had already been selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1997 by the Carolina Hurricanes in the third round in 80th position.

Nevertheless, he never played for Carolina and was given up to the Philadelphia Phantoms in the American Hockey League (AHL). After three years, he moved to an NHL team for the first time at the end of the 2001/02 season and played for the Atlanta Thrashers . For the most part, however, he was used with the Chicago Wolves in the AHL. With these he won the Calder Cup in the same season . It was not until the 2003/04 season that he finally returned to Atlanta and went on the ice for the team with moderate success. The 2005/06 season he played mostly again with the Chicago Wolves and between 2006 and 2008 with the Hartford Wolf Pack .

This was followed by further positions with the San Antonio Rampage and Phoenix Coyotes . He did not make the jump into the NHL and was demoted to the San Antonio Rampage. After the 2009/10 season , his contract with the Phoenix Coyotes, for which he had never accrued, was not renewed and Lessard agreed as a free agent in August 2010 to work with the Ottawa Senators . In the course of the 2010/11 season , the Canadian played mostly for the Binghamton Senators in the AHL and filled his role as enforcer , but also came to 24 missions for the Ottawa Senators in the NHL.

After the 2011/12 season he moved to the Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey (LNAH), where he was on the ice for the Cornwall River Kings and Blizzard CNS de Trois-Rivières until 2017 . He then ended his active career.
