Karel Bětík (born October 28, 1978 in Karviná , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player who played for the Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League from 1996 to 2005 .
Career
Karel Bětík began his career as an ice hockey player in his Czech homeland in the youth department of HC Vítkovice . From there he moved to the Kelowna Rockets in 1996 in the Canadian Junior League Western Hockey League , in which he was active in the following two years. During this period he was selected in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft in the fifth round as a total of 112th player by the Tampa Bay Lightning . For the Florida team, the defender made his National Hockey League debut in the 1998/99 season . In three games he gave two assists. The entire remaining season he spent with Tampa Bay's farm team , the Cleveland Lumberjacks from the International Hockey League , for which he scored 16 points in 74 games, including five goals. The following season he started with the Toledo Storm in the ECHL and finished it in the IHL team of the Detroit Vipers . For the 2000/01 season, the Czech moved to the Bakersfield Condors from the West Coast Hockey League .
From 2001 to 2003 Bětík was in the United Hockey League with BC Icemen , Flint Generals and Rockford IceHogs under contract. Most recently he signed a contract with the Canadian team Saint-François de Sherbrooke from the Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey , where he ended his active career in 2005 at the age of 26.
