Nikos Tselios ( Greek Νίκος Τσέλιος , * 20th January 1979 in Oak Park , Illinois ) is a former is US-American - Greek hockey player , who in his active period from 1996 to 2008 included for the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League has played . His cousin Chris Chelios was also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Nikos Tselios began his career as a hockey player in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League , in which he was active from 1996 to 1999 for the Belleville Bulls and Plymouth Whalers . During this period he was selected in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft in the first round as a total of 22nd player by the Carolina Hurricanes . For the Hurricanes, the defender made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 2001/02 season , for which he received six penalty minutes in two games. The rest of the time in the Carolinas franchise , however, he spent with their farm teams , the Cincinnati Cyclones and the Lowell Lock Monsters , in the American Hockey League .
On July 21, 2003 Tselios received a contract as a free agent with the Phoenix Coyotes , but played in the following two years exclusively for their AHL farm teams Springfield Falcons and Utah Grizzlies . For the 2005/06 season, the left shooter went to Europe for the first time, where he first played for KalPa Kuopio in the Finnish SM-liiga before ending the season at Färjestad BK from the Swedish Elitserien , with whom he won the national championship at the end of the season. After four games for the Chicago Hounds from the United Hockey League , the American with Greek roots ran until 2008 in Division 1 , the third Swedish division, for Örebro HK . He then ended his career at the age of 29.
International
For the USA Tselios took part in the U20 World Junior Championship in 1998 , in which he finished fifth with his team.
