Career
Michael Holmqvist began his career as an ice hockey player in the 1996/97 season in his hometown Stockholm with Djurgårdens IF , where he played nine games and remained unpunished. During the 1997 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the first round in 18th position by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim . Holmqvist ran the following two seasons for Färjestad BK . In 56 games he only got five points, which is why his contract was not extended and he then moved to Finland. The attacker signed with TPS Turku in the SM-liiga . He played for the Finns for four years, during which he was able to improve almost continuously. While Michael Holmqvist scored 15 points in 54 games in the 1999/2000 season , he scored 40 points in 56 games in the 2002/03 season .
The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim signed him the following season. He played 21 NHL games for the Ducks, in which he scored two goals. In the same season, however, Holmqvist was deported to the then farm team of the Ducks, the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks . There he showed constant performance again and also contributed to the success of the team. On July 30, 2005, the Ducks transferred Holmqvist to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Travis Moen . In Chicago he was part of the Blackhawks' regular squad during his two-year tenure, where he played a total of 135 games and collected 33 points scorer.
For the 2007/08 season he returned to Sweden and signed with Frölunda HC . He played 53 games and reached 17 points before he was transferred to Djurgårdens IF, which he had belonged from 1996 to 1997, for the 2008/09 season . Michael Holmqvist was also part of the team at Djurgården. In April 2010 he signed a contract with Linköpings HC and completed two seasons there before returning to Djurgårdens IF for the 2012/13 season, where he then acted as assistant captain. Following the 2013/14 season , he rose with the team in the Svenska Hockeyligan . Holmqvist ended his active professional career in October 2015.
