Petr Sýkora ([ ˈpɛtr̩ ˈsiːkora ], born December 21, 1978 in Pardubice , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey player who has been under contract with HC Pardubice from the Czech extra league since 2013 . His older brother Michal was also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Petr Sýkora began his career in the offspring of HC Pardubice , for whom he played in the junior extra league between 1994 and 1997. In the 1996/97 season he made his debut in the Czech extra league for the men's team of HC Pardubice and from that point on was a permanent member of the extra league squad. During the 1997 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the third round in a total of 76th place.

A year later he decided to move to North America, but since the Red Wings had swapped the NHL rights to him against Doug Brown with the Nashville Predators , he completed his first NHL game for the Predators. After two NHL games for the Predators, however, he was sent to the IHL to the Milwaukee Admirals . After three games in the 1999/2000 season for the Admirals, he returned to the Czech Republic for HC Pardubice.

In the 2004/05 season he was Czech champion with Pardubice, before he started a new attempt in the NHL in the 2005/06 season: He completed ten NHL games for the Washington Capitals , but could not get used to the American lifestyle again and returned to Pardubice. In the following season he improved his game significantly, so that he was not only top scorer in the extra league, but was also awarded as the best striker and league MVP .

From June 2008 Sýkora was under contract with HC Davos from the National League A and received one of four foreign licenses. He won the Swiss championship with HC Davos at the end of the 2008/09 season , but returned to his home club after this success. With this he became Czech champion at the end of the following season . In June 2010 he was signed again by HC Davos for a year. In 2011 Sýkora became Swiss champion for the second time, after which he extended his contract for another two years.

After the 2012/13 season , Sýkora moved back to his home club Pardubice in the Czech Republic.

In his career so far, Petr Sýkora has often been used in preparation games for the national team and tournaments of the Euro Hockey League , but only completed his first world championship in 2007 .
