The Euro Hockey League (EHL) is a European Cup competition in hockey (field) for men and since 2009/10 also for women, similar to the Champions League in football or handball , which was newly introduced by the European association EHF for the 2007/08 season replaces two previous European Cup competitions, the EuroHockey Club Champions Cup and the EuroHockey Cup Winners Cup . In the women's area, these competitions continued up to and including the 2018/19 season, at Easter 2020 the EHL will also start with a slightly smaller format for the women.

The main sponsor of the Euro Hockey League, a major Dutch bank that also sponsors the national league in the Netherlands, pays all travel and accommodation costs. The winner of the Euro Hockey League will receive 25,000 euros. The finalist receives 15,000 euros, the third another 10,000 euros.

A total of 24 teams from twelve countries qualify for the Euro Hockey League. Depending on the success in the European Cup competitions in recent years, a regional association provides a different number of participants, which is determined using the EHF 3-year rating:

For the national associations that cannot qualify for the EHL, there are several subordinate European Cup tournaments, which are staggered according to performance according to the EHL three-year rating.

While the previous European Cup tournaments only took place on one weekend a year (Easter or Whitsun), the introduction of the EHL has increased the number of tournament weekends to four up to the 2013/14 season. The preliminary rounds were played on two dates in autumn, the eighth and quarter finals took place over Easter and the final four over Pentecost. Since the 2014/15 season, only one preliminary tournament has been held in autumn. The knockout phase takes place at Easter and Pentecost. Exceptions here were the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons in which the knockout phase was only played at Easter.

There is a separate point rating for the group games: a win counts 5 points, a draw 2 points, a defeat with a goal difference of no more than two goals 1 point and a defeat with a goal difference of three or more 0 points.
