Monkstown Hockey Club

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Monkstown Hockey Club is an Irish sports club from Dún Laoghaire in the greater Dublin area . The club, founded in 1894 in the colors light blue and navy, is one of the oldest hockey clubs in Ireland. It is the third oldest in Leinster after Dublin University and Three Rock Rovers Hockey Club, which were founded a year earlier . The club has its facility around two kilometers south of the coast and the famous James Joyce Tower . It includes an artificial grass pitch and a natural grass pitch.

Due to a school dissolution near the club in the late 1960s, Monkstown could no longer rely on students who were already experienced in hockey for its adult teams. Therefore, youth teams have been set up since then. Women's hockey wasn't introduced until the 2000s. There are five men's teams and three women's teams in the 2014/15 season. The first men's teams play in the top division of Leinster and in parallel in the Irish Hockey League. In the 2014/15 season Monkstown takes part in the Euro Hockey League for the first time.
