history

Lakefield College School was founded in 1879 by Sam Strickland and Col. Sparham Sheldrake.

In 1895 Alexander Mackenzie became director of the school and bought it from Col. Sheldrake. He built the school's own church in 1924 and established a school education philosophy.

During the Second World War, the school name was changed to Lakefield Preparatory School. On January 1, 1966, the name was changed back to Lakefield College School.

In 1979 Prince Andrew attended Lakefield College School for one semester as an exchange student from the Scottish Gordonstoun School.

In 1997 the old church was replaced by a new one. A $ 12.5 million student center was built in 2007.

Sexual abuse

In 2015, an independent investigation found that Anglican pastor Keith Gleed (1932–2001), who worked at the school from 1974 to 1980, had sexually abused students. In May 2018, the Swiss writer Christian Kracht spoke for the first time about his abuse by Gleed.

School campus

The LCS has a 127.48 acre, wooded, waterfront campus on the eastern shore of Lake Katchewanooka , Ontario . It is north of the city of Lakefield, an hour and a half from Toronto .

There are twelve boarding houses on campus with an average of 20 students per house. The main building houses the dining room, a modern theater , a music room, an art room, lockers for day pupils, science laboratories, a library , a computer room and classrooms.

There are some sports facilities outside, for example an artificial ice surface. There is also a boathouse with sailing boats , kayaks and canoes on the bank . Other buildings include a dance studio and a weight and sports room.

In October 2008 the school opened a new building called Hadden Hall. This is named after David and Susan Hadden, who spent 23 years at Lakefield College School. The building contains a modern weight and sports room, a climbing hall, a dance studio, communal and common rooms as well as an outdoor sports area and a multi-purpose facility.

In October 2015, the latest residence, called "Uplands" opened.

student

In 2013, 365 students (grades 9-12) attended Lakefield College School, of which 252 were boarding students and 113 day students.

The boarding school students are housed in twelve different houses (Grove, Ondaatje, Memorial, Rashleigh, Upper Colebrook, Lower Colebrook, Susanna Moodie, Matthews, Wadsworth, Ryder, Cooper, Uplands), each with an adult "Head of House" (supposed to be the role a father) and an "Assistant Head of House" who is supposed to play the role of an older brother or sister while the student is away from home.

All students also have an academic supervisor. This helps with the choice of course, with the university application and organizes tutoring in all subjects, if necessary or desired.

Curriculum

LCS offers a wide range of options in the arts, languages, math, science, technology, social science and business.
