Jacob Middleton (born January 2, 1996 in Stratford , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League since September 2017 and since October 2016 for their farm team , the San Jose Barracuda , in of the American Hockey League plays on the position of defender . His brother Keaton , who is two years younger than him, is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Middleton spent the beginning of his junior years with the Huron Perth Lakers and Stratford Cullitons from his hometown, before moving from there via the OHL Priority Selection at the beginning of the 2012/13 season to the Owen Sound Attack from the Ontario Hockey League . They had selected him in the first round in eighth overall position. In his rookie season , however, the defender only played 14 games for Attack until January 2013, as he and Joseph Blandisi were transferred to league rivals Ottawa 67’s . In return, the 67's gave up Cody Ceci as well as one other player and a third-round vote for the upcoming entry draft . As a result, Middleton ran for the franchise from the Canadian capital, but completed only 15 more games by the end of the season. Nevertheless, at the end of the season he was in the league's second all-rookie team. Only at the beginning of the 2013/14 season did the defender become a regular on the team. During the season he took part in the CHL Top Prospects Game and was finally selected in the seventh round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft in 210th place - as the last player ever - by the Los Angeles Kings from the National Hockey League . However, he spent two more years at junior level and cracked in his last game year in which he as captain acted the team, the first time the mark of 30 scorer points .
After the Ottawa 67's elimination from the OHL playoffs in April 2016, Middleton received a trial contract with the Manchester Monarchs from the ECHL . These were in cooperation with the Los Angeles Kings, who, however, waived a further obligation of the defensive player after seven missions, so that he was from now on considered a free agent according to the regulations and could freely choose his team. Finally, Middleton was signed by the San Jose Barracuda of the American Hockey League in October 2016 . With his performance there, he recommended himself in the course of the 2016/17 season to cooperation partner San Jose Sharks from the NHL, who provided him with a three-year NHL entry contract in September 2017 . After Middleton had also spent the entire 2017/18 season and the first half of the 2018/19 season with the Barracuda, he was appointed to San Jose's NHL squad for the first time in early January 2019. There he made his league debut on January 5 against the Tampa Bay Lightning . A few weeks later he took part in the AHL All-Star Classic for the first time in his career .
International
For his home country, Middleton was featured in the 2013 World U-17 Hockey Challenge . There he ran for the team of his home province Canada Ontario , with whom he finished sixth in the final ranking. The defender played all five tournament games and achieved two scorer points. He scored the goal in the placement game for fifth place.
