Benki Piyãko ‡ 1 [ bˈẽjki piˈɐ̃ko ] (born February 24, 1974 in Cruzeiro do Sul , ‡ 2 Brazil ), also known under the name Benki Pianko , Benki Ashaninka , is a Brazilian indigenous man , a medicine man and political representative of the indigenous people of the Asháninka in the Brazilian state of Acre , on the border between Brazil and Peru .

Life

Benki Piyãko was born on February 24, 1974 on the Amônia River near the Peruvian border.

At the age of two, Benki was entrusted with the care of his grandfather, who gave him the name Wenki (" warrior of life") and trained him to be a shaman. Since his youth, at the age of 12, he has campaigned for the rights of his community.

Benki is a trained forest technician and is particularly responsible for public relations in his community. From 2005 to 2007 he was environmental secretary in the Rio Juruá region in the Acre. Since July 2007 he has headed the Yorenka Ãtame (forest knowledge) training center in the city of Marechal Thaumaturgo . He is currently coordinating the collaboration with non-indigenous youth in Marechal Thaumaturgo and, together with them, the Jovens Guerreiros Guardiões da Floresta (“Young Warriors Guardians of the Forest”) project.

Benki Piyãko is the leader of the Acre indigenous community. He is committed to the preservation of the local villages and also fights against the criminal exploitation of the forest areas. He contributes to environmental protection by disseminating technical knowledge in the communities.

Piyãko is also an agroforestryman and vice-president of the Asháninka organization, where he is responsible for natural resource management.

He is also active as a musician.

Awards

  • 2013: Human Rights Prize of the City of Weimar , ( Human Rights Day , as recommended by the Society for Threatened Peoples ), for his efforts to promote peaceful coexistence between the Asháninka Indians and their “white” neighbors.
  • 2012: Prêmio-E ( UNESCO , Instituto-E and City of Rio de Janeiro ), for the recognition of its initiatives in the field of sustainability development.
  • 2004: Prêmio Nacional de Direitos Humanos , for the promotion of the human rights of the Asháninka peoples and above all for the public dissemination of information about the fight of the Apiwtxa community against the attacks by Peruvian timber harvesters as well as for the defense of the territories and thus for the sovereignty of Brazil .
