Christopher John Worthy (born October 23, 1947 in Bristol , England , † August 2, 2007 in Vancouver , British Columbia ) was a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper of British origin who played 26 games for the Oakland Seals in the course of his playing career between 1967 and 1976 and California Golden Seals in the National Hockey League and 86 others for the Edmonton Oilers in the World Hockey Association .
Career
Worthy was in English Bristol born, but grew up in the Canadian province of Ontario on. During his junior years, the goalkeeper played for the Flin Flon Bombers between 1965 and 1968 - first in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League , then later in the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League and Western Canada Hockey League . At the end of his junior career, Worthy managed to be elected to the First All-Star Team of the WCHL. He also received the Del Wilson Trophy as the best goalkeeper in the league.
For the 1968/69 season , Worthy was signed by the Oakland Seals from the National Hockey League after his transfer rights had been transferred to the Seals from the Detroit Red Wings in the spring of 1968, along with Gary Jarrett , Howie Young and Doug Roberts . In return, the Red Wings had received Bobby Baun and Ron Harris . At the Oakland Seals, Worthy filled together with Charlie Hodge the post of substitute for regular force Gary Smith and came in his first year as a professional to 14 missions. As a result, the goalkeeper was mainly in the minor leagues between the posts. Until the summer of 1973 he worked for the Seattle Totems and Denver Spurs in the Western Hockey League , the Providence Reds in the American Hockey League and Kansas City Blues in the Central Hockey League . Only in the 1970/71 season were another eleven NHL appearances for the franchise now trading under the name California Golden Seals to his vita.
It was not until the 1973/74 season that an unsteady period ended for Worthy, and he found a permanent position with the Edmonton Oilers in the World Hockey Association for the following three years up to the end of his career. During this period he played 82 games before he declared his active career over at the age of 29. Worthy died in August 2007 a few weeks before his 60th birthday in Vancouver, Canada, of complications from pancreatic cancer .
