Gal Koren (born January 16, 1992 in Domžale , Slovenia ) is a Croatian - Slovenian ice hockey player who has been playing the center position at HDD Olimpija Ljubljana in the Austrian ice hockey league since January 2014 .

Career

Koren started playing ice hockey at the age of four and comes from the offspring of HDD Olimpija Ljubljana . From 2007, the native Slovenian played for one year at HC Mountfield České Budějovice from the Czech Republic , for which he was active in the U18 extra league. Subsequently, in autumn 2008, the striker moved to Jungadlern Mannheim , the junior team of the DEL club Adler Mannheim . Koren played for the young eagles in the German Junior League and celebrated winning the German Junior Championship in both 2009 and 2010 .

After the center was selected in the second round of the CHL Import Draft 2010 in 64th place by the Kelowna Rockets from the Western Hockey League , he immediately decided to move to Canada . With the Rockets, the attacker came to 39 season missions and collected four points scorer . In June 2011, Koren moved back to Europe and signed a contract with KHL Medveščak Zagreb from Croatia , which was active with his teams in the Austrian Erste Bank ice hockey league and the Croatian ice hockey league. In November 2011 he was voted EBEL YoungStar of the Month.

After Zagreb was accepted into the KHL in 2013 , Koren played for the club until the end of December 2013 before returning to his home club. In February 2014 he was loaned to HKm Zvolen in the Slovakian Extraliga for the rest of the season , but then returned to Ljubljana.

International

Koren played for Slovenia at the U18 World Junior Championship Division II in 2009 and 2010 . He was also active in the U20 World Junior Championship in Division I in 2011 and 2012 for his home country.

With the U18 selection, he was promoted to Division I in 2010, when he formed by far the best attack line of the tournament in the Ukrainian capital Kiev with Rok Leber and Žiga Pešut . While Koren prepared the most goals with 14 assists , had the best plus / minus statistics and was also named the best striker, his two teammates shared the titles of best goalscorer and top scorer. Like Leber and Pešut, Koren scored 23 points , but scored one goal less.

In the senior division, it was first used at the 2013 World Cup , when the Slovenes were relegated from the top division. In the following year he was on the ice for his colors in Division I and achieved immediate promotion with his team.
