Regulate ( English for " regulate ") is a song by the American rapper Warren G , which he recorded with Nate Dogg . The song is the first single from his debut album Regulate ... G Funk Era and was released on April 14, 1994.

content

At the beginning of the song you can hear an excerpt from a monologue from the 1988 film Young Guns . Then Warren G and Nate Dogg begin their verses, alternating up to about halfway through the song every four lines, only then do the proportions vary.

Both of them use storytelling in the song itself . Warren G raps for example, driving through the streets alone at night in search of women to pick up. Nate Dogg is also driving alone to meet with Warren G, with a group of women driving past him who crash their car because they are distracted by him. Meanwhile, Warren G meets a group of young men who threaten him with firearms and rob him. Nate Dogg arrives and shoots the attackers with his gun when Warren G was almost finished with his life. Now they both drive back to the women and Nate Dogg sings how he offers them help and lets them get into his car to drive them to a motel. After an instrumental part, they both proclaim a new era of rap music, which began with G-Funk , which is characterized by rhythm and melody. What's special about the song is that it doesn't have a repetitive refrain .

Production and samples

The song was produced by Warren G himself. He used samples from three songs by other artists. So he adopted the basic melody of I Keep Forgettin '(Every Time You're Near) by Michael McDonald and the whistling noises of Sign of the Times by Bob James . In addition, elements of the piece Let Me Ride by Dr. Dre included.

Music video

The music video for Regulate , directed by Cameron Casey, includes scenes from the film Above the Rim (with rapper Tupac Shakur ), on whose soundtrack the song is also included. The video has over 210 million views on Youtube (as of April 2020).

The content of the video is strongly based on the text of the song. This is how you see Warren G and Nate Dogg, each driving through the streets of Long Beach alone in their car at night . While Warren G encounters a group of young men with whom he is involved in a brawl, Nate Dogg encounters a group of women who crash their car because they are distracted by it. Warren G is beaten up by the gang, threatened with guns and robbed, but then Nate Dogg reaches the scene and shoots the attackers down. Now they both return to the women who are waiting by their broken car and drive them to a motel in their cars to have fun. In addition to the film scenes that are faded in from time to time, you can also see the two of them sitting on a staircase or standing against a wall performing their music.
