Ilari Filppula (born November 5, 1981 in Vantaa ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with MODO Hockey in the Svenska Hockeyligan since January 2016 . His younger brother Valtteri is also a hockey player.

Career

Ilari Filppula began his career as a hockey player at Kiekko-Vantaa , for which he was active from 2001 to 2003 in the Mestis , Finland's second-highest division. The attacker then received a contract with JYP Jyväskylä from the SM-liiga , for which he was on the ice for the following two years. After a year-long stint at their league rivals Jokerit Helsinki , he returned to JYP before the 2006/07 season . From the 2008/09 season Filppula was under contract with TPS Turku . At the end of the 2009/10 season Filppula was Finnish champions with TPS , where he was one of the top scorers in the league and was awarded the Jari Kurri trophy .

In June 2010 he signed a contract with the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League , but was sent to the farm team for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League in September 2010 . Although he was the Griffins' best points player in the 2010/11 season and scored 64 points in 76 games, Filppula was never used in the Red Wings squad. In May 2011 he decided to leave North America and signed a four-year contract with Jokerit. This was dissolved in 2013 and Filppula moved to HK CSKA Moscow in the Continental Hockey League , for which he scored 23 points in 51 games this season. In April 2014 he signed a two-year contract with HC Lugano .
