The Kurt-Schumacher-Kaserne in Hanover is a barracks of the Bundeswehr and until 2015 was the headquarters of the 1st Panzer Division . It is named after the former SPD party chairman Kurt Schumacher and is a listed building .
history
The main building of the barracks on Hans-Böckler-Allee was built in 1937 as part of the armament of the Wehrmacht and has been used exclusively for military purposes ever since. Before the Second World War , the General Command of the XI. Army corps of the Wehrmacht is based here. Partly badly damaged by bombs during the war, soldiers of the 4th American Infantry Division first moved into the building complex after the end of the war , and in 1945 the British Major Stirling took it over. The complex was named "Stirling House" after him. The British District Military Government (229th Regional Military Government) resided in the building. When the Federal Republic of Germany was founded in 1949, the "Stirling House" was still the seat of the British military headquarters. 1956 was the Military District Command II of the Bundeswehr established and first in the Prinz-Albrecht barracks in Hannover-Bothfeld stationed, but moved in 1958 for lack of space in the barracks. The British left the site in return. Until 2001, the location remained the home of Defense Area Command II. From 1994 onwards, the barracks served as the location of the merged staff of Defense Area Command II and 1st Panzer Division. In 2001 the Military District Command II was dissolved. The staff of the 1st Panzer Division remained at the location. The Lower Saxony state command is also located in the barracks . As part of the realignment of the Bundeswehr , it was announced in October 2011 that the staff of the 1st Panzer Division would be relocated to Oldenburg , which took place in 2015.
