The Indian Institute of Technology Madras ( Hindi : भारतीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान, मद्रास ), also known as IIT Madras or IITM , is a technical university in Chennai (formerly Madras) in the state of Tamil Nadu , India . The university reports directly to the Indian government.
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) are a group of state Indian universities that are currently represented in seven cities and are directly administered by the Indian central government. The IIT Madras is considered to be one of the best engineering universities in India. The IIT Madras was founded in 1959 with the help of the then government of West Germany; the agreements for this were made in 1956 at a meeting between Jawaharlal Nehru and Konrad Adenauer . The support was provided on both a technical and a financial level. The DAAD promotes regular exchange in the areas of Bachelor, Master and PhD from various German universities. One of the main streets on campus has been named Bonn Avenue as a thank you.
The very wooded campus of the IIT Madras is 2.5 km² and was formerly part of the Guindy National Park. The vast majority of students and employees also live on the protected campus. Many different animals live within the area, for example the stag goat antelope and the axis deer as well as numerous monkeys, but also snakes and scorpions.
organization
administration
The Indian Institute of Technology is a stand-alone university administered directly by the IIT Council. This council includes the Minister for Technical Education, the Directors of the IITs and the Presidents of the IITs. The IIT Council is directly subordinate to the Indian President. Professor Bhaskar Ramamurthy has been director of the IIT-Madras since September 2011.
Faculties
There are 11 engineering institutes at IIT Madras:
- Aerospace Engineering
- Technical mechanics
- biotechnology
- Chemical engineering
- Civil engineering
- Computer science
- Electrical engineering
- Construction technology
- mechanical engineering
- Materials science
- Shipbuilding
There are also the following non-engineering institutes:
Admission
Bachelor's and master's degrees as well as doctorates are offered in the 15 faculties. For admission to the Bachelor of Technology, the JEE test (Indian Institutes of Technology Joint Entrance Examination) must be taken, whereupon a ranking is created and finally approx. 2% of the applicants (approx. 10,000 students) are admitted to the course. Admission to the master’s degree varies between faculties. Admission to the Bachelor of Technology is linked to admission to the corresponding Master's. Alternatively, the GATE test (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) can be taken. In the humanities, selection is made through the HSEE test (Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination). For the two-year Master of Science program, the JAM test (Joint Admission Test to M.Sc.) is decisive; this also applies to some of the Bachelor of Science programs. Proof of professional experience and the CAT test (Common Admission Test) must be provided for the MBA course. Around 100 MBA places are awarded annually. The doctoral program and the Masters in Research have faculty's own procedures.
research
The IITM Research Park, which is right next to the campus, was founded to strengthen research and to create better outsourcing opportunities for company start-ups. Similar to Stanford and MIT, new companies have a wide range of entrepreneurial freedom and direct contact with established companies that are in the immediate vicinity. There is currently 150,000 m² of office space available on 12 floors. Conference rooms, gardens, overnight accommodation for guests and a supermarket are also available.
Ranking
In the QS World University Rankings, the IITM ranks 45th in 2012, while in 2011 it still ranks 2nd in the national comparison of Dataquest, in 2012 it is 1st place.
Grading
The grading is based on the CGPA system (Cumulative Grade Point Average) using letters, but is not directly comparable to the American GPA:
Note as a letter | Grade in GPA points | in words |
---|---|---|
S. | 10 | Excellent / outstanding achievement |
A. | 9 | Very good achievement |
B. | 8th | Good performance (good, above average) |
C. | 7th | Satisfactory work |
D. | 6th | Sufficient work |
E. | 4th | Not sufficient |
U | 0 | Unfair behavior |
The grading system has been assessed and recognized by international organizations (e.g. NTU, NUS, DAAD ).
The grade "S" is only awarded for achievements that far exceed the lecturers' expectations and if the student has made particular contributions in the course. “U” for unfair behavior is awarded if the student attempts to cheat or significantly disrupts the examination process. Notifying the parents is accompanied by this punishment.
Separate grades are given for attendance during the course, with “VG” (very good) for very good attendance, “G” (good) for good attendance and “P” (poor) for irregular attendance (<85%) .
The grade can be made up of various parts of the performance such as verbal contributions, presentations, seminar papers, lectures, tests and exams.
campus
The IIT Madras is a campus university. All institutes, student residences and administration buildings are located on the connected university campus. At 2.5 km², the campus is larger than Helgoland or Monaco . The campus was formerly part of the Guindy National Park and is still under conservation. The campus is limited by a wall and is only accessible to university members and their visitors.
fauna
There are a variety of wild animals on the campus. There are different groups of Indian hat monkeys, as well as stag goat and axis deer . In addition, around 50 species of birds and butterflies each live on the site. Snakes , scorpions , turtles and frogs also live on campus . A total of 134 different species live on the site.
flora
A total of 298 different plants were counted on the site. These include varieties of cassia and cereus . A large number of banyan figs are scattered across the site.
Facilities
In addition to the faculties, cafeterias and dormitories, there is a stadium, several cricket, soccer and tennis courts, sports facilities, two schools, a supermarket, three banks, a post office, a fruit and greengrocer, a copy shop and a shop selling or selling all kinds of goods can order this immediately.
Dormitories
There are currently the following dormitories
- Ganga
- Krishna
- Cauvery
- Brahmaputra (Brahms)
- Tapti
- Godavari (Godav)
- Alaknanda (Alak)
- Jamuna (Jam)
- Saraswati (Saras)
- Narmada (Narmad)
- Mandakini (mandak)
- Sharavati (Sharav)
- Sarayu
- Sindhu
- Pampas
- Tamraparani (Tambi / Tamra)
- Mahanadi
Sindhu, Pampa, Mahanadi and Thamirabarani have seven floors, whereas all the other (older) floors only have three or four floors. These four new dormitories alone offer space for 1,500 students.
activities
With the Shaastra and Saarang festivals, the IITM is also known nationally. Shaastra has been a large campus fair with numerous companies and the first ISO9001: 2008 certified event held by students. There will be a symposium, as well as many workshops and topic-specific events. In addition to cultural events, Saarang hosts major concerts that can accommodate up to 50,000 visitors. This is often criticized due to the nature of the nature park. Further possibilities for students and employees exist in the sports center and in the diverse range of groups in the fields of music, culture, photo and film and in thematic groups that are based on the subject areas of the faculties.
