The Guindy National Park ( Tamil : கிண்டி தேசியப் பூங்கா , English : Guindy National Park ) is a national park with an area of ​​2.8 km² in Chennai , the capital of the Indian state Tamil Nadu . It is the eighth smallest national park in India and is one of the few national parks that are located within a city. It was officially opened in 1977.

Guindy National Park was originally a game reserve on the Coromandel Coast . With an area of ​​5 km² it was one of the last remnants of the tropical dry forest. In 1821 the Briton Gilbert Rodericks bought the area for 35,000 Indian rupees and used it as a hunting ground. The endangered red deer goat antelope is considered particularly endangered, as a steady decline in population has been observed in Guindy National Park since 1924. In February 2004, all animals were counted and it was found that only 405 red deer goat antelopes live in the park. Over 150 species of birds live in the park, including partridge , red-lapped lapwing , blue-lapwing, shrike , orange woodpecker , eagle , black kite , glider , Asian paradise flycatcher , quail , parrots , bronze male , triele , robin and drongos .

There are also many species of reptiles and amphibians such as tortoises, especially the endangered Indian star tortoise . But lizards, geckos, chameleons and the Indian monitor lizard also live in the Guindy National Park. The Guindy Snake Park (also called Chennai Schlagenpark) is part of the Guindy National Park. Seven species of crocodiles and 23 different species of snakes, including the king cobra, have lived there since 2010 . There are also a variety of insects including 60 types of spiders and 60 butterflies.
