National parks in India

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The national parks in India are administered at the state level . As of July 2017, there were 103 national parks in India with a total area of 40,500  km² (around 1.23 percent of the country's area). The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), however, classified only 93 areas in category II (national park) by August 2017, and applications for recognition have been submitted for more. In 1970 there were only five national parks in India.

There are also 543 game reserves, 449 of which are listed in IUCN Category IV - comparable to the European FFH areas - as well as other protected areas and special tiger reserves that are intended to ensure the survival of India's national animal.

Due to the different categories, fewer than 100 national parks are usually named. For example, the Sundarbans National Park is not classified in Category II by the IUCN, but in Category Ia , which, however, means much higher protection.

The number of protected areas including national parks is to be increased in the long term. Several national parks are being planned, including the Kambalakonda National Park (70 km²) in Andhra Pradesh . In total, an area of approx. 182,647 km² is protected throughout India, which corresponds to almost six percent of the country's area.
