Silent Valley National Park

The Silent Valley National Park is a national park in Kerala in southern India . It forms an important component of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and is home to stocks of endangered species such as the Nilgiri tahr , Nilgiri langur and bearded monkey , which are endemic to southern India .

The national park is located in the Nilgiri Mountains in the southern Indian state of Kerala. The area of ​​the national park is located in the Palakkad district . The Silent Valley National Park borders the Mukurthi National Park in the north . With this and neighboring protected areas, such as the Mudumalai National Park , the Bandipur National Park or the Rajiv Gandhi National Park , it forms the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.

The Kunthipuzha, a tributary of the Bharathapuzha, has its source in the hills in the northeast of the national park . The altitudes of the park range from 658 to 2,383 m. The area is tropical and warm and rainy. The annual rainfall is around 6,000 mm. The annual average temperature is around 20 ° C. The vegetation therefore consists mainly of evergreen plants and is very diverse with 966 different species.

Wildlife

The national park is home to a small population of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, which is restricted to southwest India. The total population in the national park is estimated at around 30 animals. Small populations also exist in neighboring protected areas. Other endangered species in the national park that are characteristic of southern India are the Indian Charsa marten , the bearded monkey and the Nilgiri langur. A census in the years 1993–1996 revealed a population of around 500 Nilgiri langurs in the national park area. The reserve is also home to 22 other large and medium-sized mammal species, including large predators such as tiger , leopard , sloth bear and Asian wild dog . Black specimens can also be found among the leopards. Furthermore, there are Asian elephants, Gaure , Sambar deer, Indian muntjak deer, spotted squirrel , wild boar, golden jackals, reed cats, Indian civet cats , spotted musangs , otters, mongooses , hat monkeys, porcupines and giant squirrels .
