Computable Document Format ( CDF ) is one of Wolfram Research developed document format for interactive documents. CDF is supposed to fulfill several functions: All elements of a project, topic, process etc. that belong together in terms of content are to be saved in one document (all-in-one format). The content of a CDF document should not only be static, but dynamic or interactive (Live Interactive Content); the user should be able to add his own calculations with parameters he or she selected to existing calculation examples.

Create CDF documents

Mathematica is required to create CDF documents. However, there are plans to provide online tools for creating CDF documents.

Read CDF documents

CDF documents can be read with Mathematica.

Wolfram Research also offers the CDF Player to download free of charge for reading CDF documents . The CDF Player contains the complete Mathematica runtime library. In contrast to static document formats such as PDF or predefined dynamic documents such as Adobe Flash, this makes it possible to generate the document content dynamically depending on the behavior and inputs of the user and to use all algorithms and visualization methods that can be described in Mathematica.

The CDF Player supports browser plug-ins for Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera and Safari, so that content from CDF documents can be integrated into websites.

Applications

In the Wolfram Demonstration Project, the CDF is used to demonstrate small interactive programs from a wide variety of areas. These open source examples are mostly created by Mathematica users.
