The Khangchendzonga National Park is a protected area in India on the border with Nepal . It was designated in 1977 and is 1784 km² in size. The sanctuary in the state of Sikkim was named after the 8,556 m high Kangchenjunga , the third highest mountain in the world.
The national park is the habitat of the red panda , an endangered species. The pollution from garbage, which is mainly caused by tourists, is a major problem in the Khangchendzonga region. The national park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016 .
