Great Living Chola Temples is a collective term for three of the UNESCO in the list of World Heritage recorded Hindu temple dating back to the Chola dynasty (9th to 13th century) in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu .
Historical background
Since the end of the 9th century, the Chola gradually took over power from the Pallava . In terms of architecture , they tread new paths in some cases - so they did not imitate the centuries-old rock temple tradition of their predecessors, but created exclusively open-air temples. While the early temples were still small and unadorned (e.g. Enadi or Panangudi ), the Valisvara temple in Thiruvaleeswaram (around 950) marks the transition to representative temple architecture, which culminated in the later large buildings.
buildings
The World Heritage temples are the Brihadishvara Temple of Thanjavur , the Brihadishvara Temple of Gangaikonda Cholapuram and the Airavateshvara Temple of Darasuram , all of which are within a 70 km radius of each other. The Brihadishvara Temple of Thanjavur has been a World Heritage Site since 1987. In 2004 the World Heritage Site was expanded to include the temples of Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Darasuram; The admission of the Kampaharesvara temple of Tirubuvanam (around 1200), which is also significant in terms of architectural history, is still pending .
