Enadi or Enadikulam is a village with about 700 inhabitants in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . There is a medieval Shiva temple in the village .

location

Enadi is located near the Coromandel coast at a height of about 2 m above sea level. d. M. approx. 60 km (driving distance) southeast of the district capital Pudukkottai . The climate is tropical and warm; Rain actually only falls in the monsoon months of August to December.

population

The inhabitants of the place are predominantly Hindus ; other religious communities hardly play a role among the rural population of southern India. The proportion of women in the population is - as is often the case in South India - around 3% higher than the proportion of men.

economy

In the area around the village, agriculture and some livestock (chickens) are operated.

history

From the 9th to the 12th century, the region was ruled by the not insignificant dynasty of the Irrukuvel , who for a long time were vassals of the Pallavas , who ruled from Kanchipuram , but whose empire was gradually occupied by the resurgent Chola from around 850 AD . It is unclear who commissioned the temple.

Attractions

The temple, which is only about 5.20 m long and 3.80 m high, shows clear features of the Chola architecture and dates from around 900 and was dedicated to the god Shiva . It consists of an approximately square cella ( garbhagriha ) with a side length of approx. 3.20 m and a small portico ( mandapa ) supported by 2 peculiarly divided pillars . The outer wall of the cella is divided by pilasters ; the slightly protruding eaves cornice of the cella contains small blind windows ( kudus ). The square building-like roof structure shows a hood-like curved roof.
